China Mini Car Convertible
China is kicking off the global electric car revolution with small, affordable vehicles that are designed to appeal to mainstream consumers.china mini car A recent survey by the website carwow showed that one in four drivers would now consider a Chinese vehicle – up from just 11% five years ago. But Chinese manufacturers will have to work hard to overcome the perception of poor build quality if they want to make a real impact.
Among the most interesting new arrivals in this class of vehicle is the Baojun Yep, the latest in the line of mini EVs from SAIC-GM-Wuling, the joint venture between General Motors GM -2.china mini car 24% and China’s Wuling. The company’s original Hongguang Mini EV has been a huge hit in China, notching up more than a million sales since its launch in July 2020.
But a convertible version is now available and the company is eyeing markets beyond Asia.china mini car It is already selling the model in Europe under the name FreZe Nikrob, with an offer of free battery charging and roadside assistance for the first year. The Yep’s price starts at €13,000 ($13,800) and there are a number of options that allow buyers to add features such as air conditioning, parking sensors and more advanced seatbelts. The Yep can carry four people, although rear passengers may find it cramped.
The car uses a single electric motor producing 50 kilowatts and 140 pound-feet of torque to drive the front wheels. It has a top speed of 60 mph and can travel for up to 100 miles between charges. It can be charged in just three hours using a public rapid charger.
China’s smallest fully electric car is the Wuling’s Hongguang Mini EV Cabrio, which was unveiled at this week’s Shanghai auto show. It is powered by a 30kWh LFP battery from Gotion Hightech that delivers up to 150km of range, or the higher-powered 35kW version with a top speed of 210km.
The little convertible will join a number of other models from the Hongguang line, including the KFC Special Edition that launched in 2022 with an avocado green, lemon yellow or white paint job and extra safety features. The Macaron variant, aimed at young women, debuted last year with a variety of pastel colors and interior finishes. The brand is also launching the Gameboy Special Edition and the Macaron Plus, which will come with an additional set of safety features. The new model will compete with electric scooters, motorcycles and more conventional small cars in the world’s most populous nation. But its popularity is a reminder that there is still demand for affordable and functional, environmentally friendly small vehicles, even in densely populated cities like Shanghai.
