These cars are very basic, with bare-bones features such as antilock brakes and tire pressure monitors standard. You can upgrade to a rearview camera or parking sensors for a small fee, but don't expect the same level of equipment as you might find in European models. You'll also notice that these vehicles aren't subjected to the same sort of crash tests as more upscale models. Chinese Youtuber Wheelsboy recently put the Hongguang and its boxy competitors through a series of test drives, and they all handled like walk-in closets on wheels.
Despite these shortcomings, the Hongguang Mini EV has become a hit in China. It moved an eye-watering 395,451 units in 2021—more than twice as many as Australia's smallest car, the Kia Picanto. But what gives? Well, the fact that it costs less than AU$7,000 helps, of course. It is also a reminder of the need for densely populated cities to have low-cost, small vehicles that can tackle urban traffic and make use of public transport networks.
That might explain why a similar-looking model has now been unveiled by Wuling's sister brand Baojun. The aptly named Baojun Yep is a tiny four-seat SUV with a single electric motor that can produce up to 50 kilowatts of power and 140 Newton meters (103 pound-feet of torque). The car is front-wheel drive, but Baojun will eventually offer a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version as well.
The Baojun Yep will initially go on sale in China in early 2023. It is available in two battery options: a 30kWh LFP unit from Gotion Hightech that enables a 150km range, and a 35kWh EV NMC cell option with a 210km range. Both will be offered with a manual transmission or a CVT. Unlike its illustrious parent, the Yep will not offer a touchscreen infotainment system, but it will feature physical switchgear and "funky projections of information" on the dashboard. Hopefully that is enough to win the hearts of prospective buyers in Japan and other markets where it will be sold.
