The BYD Seagull will be the first fully-electric Chinese car to hit European shores, but the company hasn’t announced any plans to export it to the United States. It would likely have to be re-engineered to meet stricter European safety standards, something that could prove expensive.

In the meantime, BYD is focusing on its home market, where it has established a network of 100 showrooms in Britain, Germany and Sweden. It is also preparing to open showrooms in Japan and Australia. The Atto 3 is its first car to go on sale in the UK, but it will soon be joined by the Dolphin hatchback and Seal sedan.

Unlike some other Electric Vehicle makers, BYD’s executives have long known that the company was not ready for the global marketplace when it launched its first car in 2013. But five years later, the BYD company is the world’s largest producer of e-buses and e-cars. Its leaders are optimistic that the company can double its sales of NEVs in 2023. That would put it on a par with rivals such as Li Auto, Nio, GM and Toyota. But BYD will take more than that to compete with Tesla, which is expected to sell 4 million NEVs in 2023. BYD will need to find a way to make those cars at scale and at lower prices than competitors can. That might be the hardest challenge of all.
